"Ah, look who's finally with us," a voice said in the brightness. "About time you stopped sleeping. I'm can't keep these two men entertained. All they want to talk about is wood and books. Do you know how boring that is?"
"Brorm?" Thornbane heard her own voice. Distant, edged in pain.
"Don't sound so disappointed," the goblin said, sounding no closer. "You future lover is here, too."
"Thornbane?" His voice sounded close. She could smell his scent. His voice seemed to hover over her.
She pulled her eyes open. The brightness stabbed. She threw up a hand. "Ow."
"Let me pull the curtain," a third voice, Stearc, said. The mage was up, moving to a window.
When he closed the curtain, cutting off the sunlight, Thornbane dropped her arm. "Where are we?"
"Glagoran," Iden said, wearing a warm smile. "Rekl worked with Tossard to get us a few rooms. Dounwelleba paid for them. They wouldn't take our coin."
"We tried," Stearc said. Standing behind his cousin, his smile was more timid than Iden's, but just as friendly.
Thornbane tried to sit up, but her head swam.
"Slow," Iden said, helping her down. "You took quite a tumble."
"My apologies," Stearc said. "I hadn't used that shield spell for years, and I'd forgotten how small it was."
"Just not big enough to block out an entire avalanche," Brorm said, taking a seat in a chair stuck in the corner of the small room.
"I'm⦠I'm sorry," Thornbane said once the dizzy spell passed.
Iden cocked his head. "For what?"
"Had I not been so stubborn, we would have been off that trail sooner." She groaned. "We might not have been on it at all had I taken Dounwelleba up on her offer to train me as we waited out the weather."
"Buggers, we're alive. Don't worry about it," Brorm said.
"Yeah, plus her offer still stands," Iden said.
"Dounwelleba's?"
"Yes."
Brorm snorted. "She's just waiting for you to get your lazy ass out of bed."
"Whenever you're ready," Stearc said, more kindly than the goblin. "We've been having excellent conversations about this untamed magic. In fact, she's been incredibly helpful even to me. I understand the influence of the hex much better than I ever did. What she'll do for you is an exciting prospect to think about."
"Too soon to mention needing to get back to Gnut, get our horses, and start the search for the amulet?" Her laugh was weak.
Brorm shook her head. The small spiked ball earrings she wore jingled. "That's not going to happen."
Iden's hand rested on Thornbane's arm. "The pass is buried. I've asked around the commune and got different answers. One thing the dwarves have consistently said is that we'll see at least two avalanches each season. One at the start of the winter. One at the end, as well. They say whenever their gods shine the suns with fierceness, the pass will open again. Tossard was more helpful. He said it most likely will be months before it opens again."
Thornbane's hand went to her head again, but not to stave off the dizziness this time. "Months? I don't have months.
